Quick answer: Most men need between 1,000 and 3,500 grafts for their first hair transplant. A receding hairline (Norwood 2–3) usually takes 800–2,500 grafts. Thinning at both the front and crown (Norwood 4–5) often needs 2,500–4,500. Your exact number depends on how much of your scalp is thinning, your donor density and your hair thickness, which is why it is confirmed in a consultation.

Typical graft counts by Norwood stage

The Norwood scale grades male pattern hair loss from 1 (no loss) to 7 (only a band of hair at the back and sides). These ranges are typical starting points for hair grafting for men, not quotes.

Norwood stage

What it looks like

Typical total grafts

2

Slight recession at the temples

800–1,500

3

Deep temple recession, M-shaped hairline

1,500–2,500

3 Vertex

Stage 3 plus early crown thinning

1,800–2,800

4

Hairline and crown both thinning, band still between them

2,500–3,500

5

Band between front and crown is thinning

3,000–4,500

6

Front and crown have joined

4,500–6,000 (often 2 sessions)

7

Only a horseshoe of hair remains

5,500+ (usually 2 sessions)

What is a graft, and how many hairs is it?

A graft is one follicular unit: a tiny natural group of 1 to 4 hairs. In an FUE hair transplant, FUE hair grafts are taken one at a time from the back and sides of the scalp. At that rate, 2,000 grafts usually give you roughly 4,000–5,000 hairs.

Single-hair grafts build a soft, natural front hairline. Two- to four-hair grafts sit behind it to add density.

What changes the number for you?

Two people at the same Norwood stage can need very different graft counts. These four factors matter most:

  • Donor density
The back and sides of your scalp act as the donor area we draw from. More follicles per square centimetre means more grafts are available over your lifetime.
  • Hair thickness and texture
Coarse, wavy or curly hair covers more scalp per graft than fine, straight hair.
  • Hair-to-skin colour contrast
Dark hair on light skin shows gaps more, so it may need more grafts for the same look.
  • Your goal
A soft, mature hairline needs fewer grafts than a low, dense one. We plan for how your hair will look at 50, not only next year.

Hair Grafting Price: What 500 to 3,000 Grafts Cost

At Hair Transplant Medical Centre, hair graft price is set by session and graft count, as listed on our hair transplant cost page:

Grafts Sessions Cost (CAD) Works out to

500

1 $5,000 $10.00 per graft

1,000

1 $5,500

$5.50 per graft

2,000

1 $7,250

$3.63 per graft

3,000

2

$8,500

$2.83 per graft

The cost per graft drops as the graft count rises. That is why comparing the hair transplant Toronto cost per graft between clinics only works if you compare the same graft count.

Hair transplant financing is available from $76 bi-weekly with $0 down through Beautifi, subject to approval, with loan terms from 12 to 72 months.

Can I get all my grafts in one session?

At our clinic, cases up to about 2,000 grafts are usually done in one session, and around 3,000 grafts are split into two. Larger cases may need a second procedure, and the timing is confirmed at your assessment.

Do I need more grafts later?

You may, because transplanted hair is permanent but the hair you still have can keep thinning. That is why we plan your first session around where your hair loss is heading. Many patients never need a second procedure; some choose one years later. Read more on whether hair transplant results last a lifetime.

Hair grafting for women

Women usually thin across the top rather than losing a hairline. Grafts are placed between existing hairs to add density, often 1,000–2,500 grafts. Not every woman is a candidate, because diffuse thinning can also affect the donor area. See our page on hair transplant for women.

How we confirm your graft count

In a free consultation (in person in Toronto, Mississauga or Oakville, or by WhatsApp, FaceTime or Zoom), we:

  1. Grade your Norwood stage and map the thinning areas.
  2. Measure donor density under magnification.
  3. Draw a proposed hairline with you.
  4. Give you a written graft count and price before you book anything.

FAQ

How many hairs is 2,000 grafts?
One graft usually holds 1–4 hairs, so 2,000 grafts is roughly 4,000–5,000 hairs.

Is 3,000 grafts a lot?
It is a large case. It usually covers the hairline and much of the front of the scalp, and at our clinic it is done over two sessions.

How many grafts does a hairline need?
Rebuilding the hairline and temples alone usually takes 1,000–2,000 grafts.

How much does a hairline transplant cost in Canada?
At our clinic, a hairline case of 1,000–2,000 grafts costs 5,500–7,250 CAD. The final price depends mostly on the graft count.

How much does a 5,000-graft hair transplant cost?
A 5,000-graft case is almost always done over two or more sessions. At our clinic, the cost per graft falls as the count rises, from $3.63 at 2,000 grafts to $2.83 at 3,000, and we quote 5,000-graft plans in writing after your assessment.

Do women need more or fewer grafts?
Women with diffuse thinning often need 1,000–2,500 grafts placed between existing hair.

Can I run out of donor hair?
Yes, donor hair is limited. A careful plan spreads it over your lifetime instead of using it all at once.
