Ozempic Hair Loss: Is It Permanent, and When Does a Hair Transplant Help?
Last updated on October 23, 2026
Quick answer: Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and similar GLP-1 drugs are linked to a modestly higher risk of hair loss. Most of it is temporary shedding (telogen effluvium) that usually settles a few months after weight stabilizes. But if you already carry the genes for pattern baldness, the medication may speed up hair loss that will not come back on its own. A scalp assessment is the way to tell the two apart.
Does Ozempic cause hair loss? What the 2026 research found
Three studies this year moved “Ozempic hair” from social media anecdote to published evidence on GLP-1 hair loss:
| Study | What it found |
| The BMJ, July 2026 (Penn Medicine, two comparisons of about 27,000 and 23,000 patients) | Adults with type 2 diabetes on GLP-1 drugs had a 37% higher risk of hair loss than those on SGLT-2 inhibitors, and 68% higher than DPP-4 inhibitors. Absolute risk stayed low (about 7 cases per 1,000 person-years). The link was with non-scarring hair loss. |
| JAAD International, February 2026 (George Washington University, ~550,000 patients) | GLP-1 users had higher odds of both telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) at 12 months, independent of age, sex, BMI and diabetes. |
| Journal of Investigative Dermatology, September 2026 (NYU Langone, genetic study) | In men genetically prone to male-pattern baldness, higher GLP-1 receptor activity was linked to about a 7% added risk of pattern hair loss. |
None of these studies proves the drugs directly cause hair loss, and none says you should stop your medication. They do show the link is real enough to plan for.
Mounjaro and Wegovy hair loss: is it different?
Wegovy contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic (semaglutide). Mounjaro and Zepbound contain tirzepatide. The BMJ study looked at the GLP-1 drug class as a whole, and reports of shedding involve all of them. The pattern is similar: shedding tends to follow fast weight loss and lower food intake, whichever brand you take.
Two kinds of hair loss, two different outcomes
- Telogen effluvium (shedding). Rapid weight loss, eating much less, and low iron, zinc or protein can push many hairs into the resting phase at once. You notice diffuse shedding, often 2–4 months after starting or increasing the dose. The follicles stay alive, so hair usually regrows once weight and nutrition stabilize.
- Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). This is genetic and progressive: a receding hairline, thinning crown, or a widening part in women. The new research suggests GLP-1 drugs may speed it up in people already prone to it. This type does not reverse on its own.
Many people have both at once, which is why the shedding “settles” but the hairline does not come back.
Women and GLP-1 hair loss
Women are more likely than men to notice diffuse thinning on these medications, partly because they often lose more weight. If you see a widening part or thinning at the crown that does not improve after your weight stabilizes, it may be female pattern hair loss rather than shedding. Female pattern baldness treatment in Toronto starts with the right diagnosis, because the plan for shedding and for pattern loss is different.
Signs your hair loss may not grow back on its own
- Thinning is concentrated at the temples, crown or part line rather than all over.
- Hair is getting finer and shorter in those areas, not just falling out.
- Pattern hair loss runs in your family.
- More than 6 months after your weight stabilized, the thin areas look the same or worse.

What you can do
1. Do not stop your medication on your own
Talk to your prescribing doctor first.
2. Support your nutrition
Ask your doctor about protein intake and checking iron and vitamin levels.
3. Get your hair loss diagnosed
A scalp exam under magnification at a hair loss clinic in Toronto shows whether follicles are shrinking (pattern loss) or just resting (shedding).
4. Treat early pattern loss
Medical hair loss treatment and PRP hair treatment can help protect the hair you still have. Compare the options in minoxidil vs hair transplant and PRP vs hair transplant.
5. Consider a transplant once things are stable
If pattern loss has left permanent thin areas, an FUE hair transplant moves resistant follicles from the back of the scalp into those areas.
When is a hair transplant the right step?
Many hair surgeons suggest waiting until your weight has been stable for several months, often around 6. By then, temporary shedding has had time to recover, so we can see which areas truly need grafts. We also check that your donor area is healthy and that you are well enough for a few hours of surgery under local anaesthesia.

FAQ
Does Ozempic cause hair loss?
Studies published in 2026 link GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic, to a higher risk of hair loss, but they cannot prove the drug is the direct cause. Rapid weight loss is a known trigger.
Will my hair grow back after Ozempic?
Shedding from rapid weight loss usually recovers within several months of weight stabilizing. Pattern hair loss that the medication may have sped up generally does not recover without treatment.
Is Mounjaro hair loss worse than Ozempic hair loss?
There is no clear evidence that one brand is worse. Hair shedding is linked more to how fast and how much weight you lose. Talk to your prescriber about your specific medication.
Can I get a hair transplant while taking Ozempic?
Often, yes, but timing matters. Most clinics prefer your weight to be stable first so the plan targets permanent loss, not temporary shedding.
Does biotin stop GLP-1 hair loss?
There is little evidence that biotin helps unless you are deficient. Getting enough overall nutrition matters more.
Where can I get hair loss treatment in Toronto for GLP-1 shedding?
Start with a scalp assessment. We see patients at our Toronto, Mississauga and Oakville clinics, or virtually.
